and what is it?
that whisper through lightning bolt.
wooden curls
from ash,
crack in your wall.
could you get close enough to touch it,
reach in and get something from it?
but what help would it be?
what lies in the burn wound
of your house, but heat?
but rocks.
you will ask what it wants tonight.
in sightlessness, you still feel
ash shuddering
EDITORIAL PRAISE
The world is going to hear from this Ellie Elrod again. “What lies in the burn wound / of your house, but heat?” I’ve been walking around for days in the mantra of this line.
Ellie Elrod is a senior at Goose Creek High School who will graduate in June of 2021. They live in Goose Creek, South Carolina, and spend their free time writing, listening to music, playing video games, and watching movies. As a writer, their specialties are screenwriting and poetry.
